How can I tell if my child’s prescription is changing too quickly?
While rate of change is important, there are several risk factors we must consider. While myopia can worsen gradually, rapid progression increases the risk of high myopia and long-term eye problems. A prescription increase of 0.50 diopters or more in a year is considered fast.
We should also consider other risk factors when deciding whether to enroll your child in a progressive myopia management program.
Risk Factors for Myopia Progression in Children
-
Family history / Genetics – One or both parents with myopia increases risk.
-
Early onset of myopia – Children who become nearsighted at a younger age tend to progress faster.
-
Rapidly worsening prescription – An increase of 0.50 diopters or more per year is a warning sign.
-
Extensive near work / screen time – Long hours on mobile devices, reading, or homework can contribute to faster progression.
-
Limited outdoor time / low sunlight exposure – Less time outdoors is associated with higher myopia progression.
-
Poor visual environment or posture – Reading too close, poor lighting, or prolonged near work can increase risk.
-
Ethnicity – Children of East Asian descent statistically have higher progression rates.
Children with one or more parents who are myopic will more likely be candidates for progressive myopia management programs than children without myopic parents. We recommend regular eye exams every 6–12 months between the ages of 6-15 as essential to monitor changes and catch rapid progression early. Myopia can continue to progress into college and graduate school years. This makes early intervention with treatments more critical than ever. Unlike years past, today we are able to provide specialized contact lenses, Stellest eyeglasses, or other myopia management strategies that are proven to slow eye growth, reduce future prescription strength, and protect long-term vision.
Myopia Management for Children with Essilor Stellest™ Lenses
Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming increasingly common in children—and it often worsens year after year, sometimes progressing more rapidly over time. Without proper management, progressive myopia can increase the risk of serious eye health conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
At Eye Department, we provide advanced myopia management solutions, including FDA-authorized Essilor® Stellest™ lenses. These innovative eyeglass lenses are specifically designed to both correct blurry vision and slow the progression of myopia in children, helping protect long-term eye health.
While newer versions like Essilor® Stellest™ 2.0 are currently available in Europe and Canada, the FDA has recently approved Essilor® Stellest™ 1.0 for use in the United States—making this cutting-edge technology accessible to families here at home.
What Makes Essilor Stellest™ Lenses Different?
Unlike traditional glasses that only correct vision, Essilor® Stellest™ lenses use advanced technology to actively manage myopia progression. The lenses feature thousands of tiny, invisible lenslets that gently signal the eye to slow excessive growth—one of the primary causes of worsening nearsightedness.
Benefits of Stellest lenses include:
-
Clinically proven myopia control technology
-
Clear, comfortable vision for everyday wear
-
Non-invasive treatment option for children
-
Reduced risk of high myopia and related eye diseases
This makes Stellest lenses an effective, child-friendly solution for families looking to take a proactive approach to myopia control.
