Portland Myopia Management

One of the most effective and well researched studies for managing progressive myopia is low-dose atropine eye drops. Used once nightly, these drops slow the signals that drive excessive eye growth (elongation), which is the underlying cause of worsening myopia. 

 

Studies show low dose 0.05% atropine significantly reduced the progression of myopia with minimal side effects. Most children tolerate these eye drops very well, with minimal side effects. While atropine does not “cure” myopia or eliminate the need for glasses, it can meaningfully reduce how quickly your child’s prescription worsens.

In practical terms, nightly atropine drops may lower their risk of developing high myopia and the associated complications later in life. When we identify a child with progressing myopia, we recommend early intervention before significant elongation occurs. Managing myopia early is not simply about clearer vision today, it is about protecting your child’s long-term eye health.

 

Childhood is the most critical period, as this is when myopia tends to progress the fastest. Slowing eye growth during these years can have lasting benefits.

If your child is identified as a candidate for myopia management, we will closely monitor their progress through regular follow up examinations. Depending on the rate of progression and clinical findings, visits are typically scheduled at intervals such as:

• 3,6, and 12 months, or

• 2,4,6 and 10th months​
