Myopia Management Matters
Myopia is a condition caused by abnormal eye growth, not just the need for glasses. When the eye grows too long from front to back, light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it, resulting in blurred distance vision. Higher levels of myopia increase the lifetime risk of a retinal detachment or tare, glaucoma and myopic macular degeneration as well as other eye complications. This is why it's important to slow progressive myopia.

Our goal is to set the foundation early for a lifetime of clear vision.

Myopia Management Programs
If either parent or both have Myopia, aka nearsightedness, schedule your child for a Myopia evaluation. Healthy eyes are about more than just seeing clearly. Increased myopia can negatively impact your child's visual system and may lead to future ocular disease. Eye Department's Myopia management program helps slow your child’s changing prescription while supporting clearer vision and safer eyes long‑term. This will provide a better learning experience in school, performance in sports, and everyday life with friends.
At what age should my child start myopia management?
Is it too early or too late?
Myopia management is typically recommended as soon as myopia is diagnosed and progressing, typically between ages 5 and 16, because earlier treatment can significantly slow eye growth during the years when progression is fastest. Eye Department even has patients as young as toddlers all the way into their early 20's utilizing Myopia treatment programs.
It’s rarely too early to begin myopia management once nearsightedness is diagnosed. Children ages 5–16 who exhibit myopic progression tend to be most active patients. While earlier treatment generally provides the greatest benefit, it’s rarely too late to start. New options like Essilor's Stellest spectacle lenses or myopia control daily contact lenses can still help slow further progression during the growing years. We have patients in their early to mid twenties and those in graduate school who are utilizing our myopia treatment programs.
Does my child really need myopia management if they can just wear regular glasses?
What signs in my child’s vision should prompt me to book an eye exam?
Regular glasses correct blurry vision, but they do not slow the progression of myopia or reduce the risk of future eye health complications associated with higher prescriptions. Myopia management options, such as specialized control lenses or contact lenses, are designed to both correct vision and help slow eye growth during the critical years of development.
Schedule an eye exam sooner if your child is squinting, complaining of blurry distance vision, having frequent headaches, holding devices very close, or struggling to see the board at school. Additionally, if one or both parents have a history of myopia, your child has a higher risk, making early and proactive eye evaluations especially important.
We see families, not just patients.
